LS Power
Challenge
In 2006, LS Power, a privately-held, independent power-producing company headquartered in East Brunswick, NJ, applied to the federal government and the State of Nevada to build and operate two major energy-producing sources in Nevada, the Southwest Intertie Project (SWIP), a 515-mile, 500 kilovolt, overhead transmission line that will provide affordable energy to Northern and Southern Nevada, and the White Pine Energy Station, a 1,600 megawatt (MW) modern, pulverized coal-fired power generation facility that will be located 285 miles north of Las Vegas near the city of Ely, NV in White Pine County.
Holly Corporation
Challenge
Southern Nevada is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. For more than four decades, Southern Nevada relied, at great risk, on a single source of petroleum - a parallel set of pipelines that stretch 250 miles from Colton, California. The demand for fuel products in Southern Nevada is approaching the existing supply, and anticipated demand resulting from the growth in both tourism and the resident population, which is expected to exceed supply in the near future. Additionally, the fuel delivery and storage system must be upgraded to ensure its reliability in the event of natural disaster or other potential system failure.
